The picture in my home

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All that is gold does not glitter,

Not all those who wander are lost;

The old that is strong does not wither,

Deep roots are not reached by the frost

(J.R.R Tolkien The Fellowship of the Ring)

When my mother asked me to clean the dust from the picture, I realized that it’s been a long time that I had stopped noticing it.

This scenery is hanging on the outside wall of my parents’ room. I’m not sure but I think that it was in 1992 that my mother brought this scenery along with two other pictures.

I remember one was a scenery from some Northern areas of Pakistan and other was a picture of a vase. These past years saw us changing home thrice. The ups and downs of life left its impact on our belongings.

After living a life to their fullest, two of the three pictures got worn out. Today, two new pictures have taken their place but this one still exists in our lives.

As a child my observation of this picture was different. I used to take a refuge in its calmness. In those days I wished to take a look inside a hut. For me there was a magic in the reflection of large trees in the water and the white sky with the tinge of pink color looked beautiful to my eyes.

For a long time, I wished to sketch a picture like this. And, today when I’m a grown up girl, I’m amazed that how could I forget such an innocent desire of my childhood. As a child my heart was pure and my mind was relaxed but now the germs of revenge and hatred have blackened my heart.

Today, I’m not relax but I’m restless. Never ending desires and wishes of my life have left me tired.

I don’t believe in keeping regrets but there is one in my life: I wanted to conquer the world and in order to reach the moon; I forget the simple pleasures in my life.

  1. Wow Madeeha how beautifully expressed your story is and how true. Funny how something, in this case that picture, can bring back such memories, the days of innocence. That’s what we must not lose as we grow older and yet I guess realistically impossible not to. As you so eloquently put it, your heart has been blackened by the germs of revenge and hatred. How you are restless and not relaxed. How can we capture those feelings again that we enjoyed as youngsters? Must we see the magic in each day and not the misery…I think that would be a start. You are a very elegant writer, thank you for sharing your memories, it made me stop and think about what reminds me of when I was a child. I love the quote too, so appropriate. Thanks again!! 🙂

    1. The other day, I asked my younger sister to read this post and she replied that she don’t like reading my philosophical thoughts 🙂
Well, if she’s right than I won’t write it intentionally. Once, the mind was ready to write, fingers started to help automatically.
You’re very right in saying that this message of innocence of childhood must not be forgotten. I’m happy that you like reading this post and this reminds me of something which I’ve been thinking lately.
Your daily grateful posts are really inspiring for me. I wish to read a book named “Things I’m grateful for” by Deb 🙂

      1. Your sister is missing out on something so wonderful, that’s unfortunate, but I guess it’s her choice. She would be so inspired if she read what you wrote. I’m happy that you shared it with us, I truly loved every word and could feel your emotion. You convey that in your words wonderfully.
Thank you for telling me that you find my daily posts inspiring, I sit here with a smile from ear to ear…seriously! I think you have a superb idea about the book and I was thinking, in May it will be one year that I have been posting them, perhaps I should print them out and submit them as a 365 day Daily Grateful Post type of book, one to read for each day!! Oh my goodness I’m getting really excited about this idea now…what do you think? Honestly do you think you and others might be interested in a book like that? I can’t thank you enough for saying that and now I’m all inspired!!!

        1. My sister is fourteen. Though, she love to read and write but I guess she’s quite young to grasp such ideas 🙂
Deb definitely go for such book. Believe me it would be a splendid idea and your readers would love that 🙂

          1. Ah 14 I remember that age, when we thought we knew it all, if we only knew then, huh? So you can attribute her attitude to adolescence and smile knowing we were once there. Thank you Madeeha you have inspired me to go forward in that direction. I hope your day is all that you want it to be and more!! 😊

      1. I really miss it and keep thinking I will get back to it but that means I will have to ignore my blog and all the blogs I read. Kind of hate doing that but I may take a break just to get it out of my system. 😀

  2. Great quote. Everybody is unsatisfied with life at some point. You are right though, the simpler pleasures of life need to enjoyed. We get where we need to be eventually.

    1. You’re so very right in your analysis Mandi. True the simpler pleasures of life needed to be enjoyed and the message needed to be reminded often.

  3. Very nicely written… And the picture frame is beautiful.. True, when we were younger we used to find happiness in small things.. And as grown up’s now, we try to find happiness in darkness of pleasures and desires. Have a great day.. 🙂
